“The Change Starts with Us”: Youth from Selemetya Neighborhood Set a Personal Example for a Better Future
Personal responsibility, active citizenship, and the power of leading by example were at the core of an inspiring youth initiative held on July 10, 2026, in the Selemetya neighborhood. Under the slogan “The Change Starts with Us,” the event fully reflected the energy and vision of local young people, who acted as the primary initiators, planners, and drivers of the meeting.
The team of the International Youth Center – Ruse happily stood behind the youth, supporting the logistics, providing the necessary materials, and creating a safe environment for sharing, while giving the participants full freedom to unleash their potential.
An Idea Born and Realized by Young People The youth played the leading role in the initiative—they proposed the concept, planned the activities, and actively engaged their peers in the discussions. Their main goal was to demonstrate that major changes in society consist of small everyday steps and the personal choices made by each of us.
Over the course of two hours filled with a positive atmosphere and high enthusiasm, 12 young people from the neighborhood took part in a series of interactive games and creative challenges:
-
“A Step Toward Change”: By answering questions related to environmental protection, volunteering, helping family, and education, participants visualized how good habits move us forward as a society.
-
“The Decision Wheel”: Split into teams, the youth demonstrated critical thinking and impressive teamwork skills, proposing realistic, practical solutions to address conflicts, pollution, and the utilization of leisure time.
-
“The Tree of Change”: The young people created a visual symbol of their shared aspirations, with each participant placing a colorful note containing a personal promise on how they would contribute to a better environment and better relationships.
-
“The Message Map”: The finale of the initiative focused on values such as kindness, respect, courage, and mutual aid. Each participant shared their personal perspective on moral responsibility and gave examples of how these messages can come to life in the real world.
Inspiring Results The event proved that when young people are given the opportunity to express their opinions freely and take responsibility, they develop key social and leadership skills, confidence, and civic engagement.
The initiative in the Selemetya neighborhood is a bright example that youth are not just the future, but the current drivers of positive change in their communities. The team of the International Youth Center – Ruse will continue to believe in their ideas and support them on their path to realization!
