Youth Initiative Commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the April Uprising
On April 20, 2026—in a spirit of patriotism and continuity—the “White Swallows” volunteer squad of Yordan Yovkov Secondary School – Ruse organized an exciting initiative dedicated to one of the most memorable dates in Bulgarian history. The event, which is part of the national “Reading Marathon” campaign, was organized in partnership with the International Youth Center (IYC) – Ruse.
The main focus of the initiative was commemorating the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising. The “White Swallows” volunteers stepped into the roles of storytellers and mentors, presenting key moments of the heroic events of 1876 to their younger schoolmates.
Through reading historical texts, the volunteers successfully transported the attendees back in time. The young listeners were genuinely intrigued—they followed every word with immense interest and asked numerous questions to learn more about the bravery of the April insurgents.
The realization of this initiative was made possible thanks to the active assistance of the team from the International Youth Center – Ruse, who supported the logistics and methodological preparation, as well as the class teachers and the management of Yordan Yovkov Secondary School – Ruse, who provided the necessary organization and backed the students’ enthusiasm.
The International Youth Center expressed special gratitude to the “White Swallows” volunteers. Their dedication, initiative, and desire to preserve historical memory are proof that today’s youth carry the values of the National Awakeners (buditeli) within them.
The event concluded with a promise of more joint initiatives in the future.
